Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), multipotent stem cells widely used in human for several clinical purposes, are now available for pet dogs at KUVACB. MSCs have shown great promise in treating various conditions in dogs, including:

- Orthopedic issues: Arthritis, ligament injuries, and bone fractures

- Neurological diseases: Spinal cord injuries and stroke

- Immune-mediated disorders: Allergies and autoimmune diseases

- Other conditions: Diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

How do MSCs work?

Missed a chance to collect stem cells when your puppies were born? It is not too late because MSCs can be harvest from adult animals. Strengthened by rigorous research, our veterinary experts at KUVACB have developed a method to isolate and expand dog MSCs effectively.

MSC collection is performed at the same time when your pets undergo elective surgery e.g., neutering at the hospital. No harm is caused by the procedure as the surgeon will collect only small pieces of fat tissue containing MSCs during neutering.

Once collected from the animal, the tissues are immediately processed in our cell culture lab to ensure the highest cell viability for MSCs to be isolated. MSCs are further expanded in the lab and tested for cell molecular markers to ensure the identity of MSCs.

Characterized MSCs are further safeguarded in our cryostorage. Pet owners can opt for a lifelong storage of their pets' stem cells that would be used in the future as cellular therapy to treat common degenerative conditions in dogs. As MSCs are derived from individual animals, MSC therapy is self-specific and excludes the risk of adverse immunogenic reactions that occur when cells from different genetic are delivered into the body.

เซลล์ต้นกำเนิด หรือ สเต็มเซลล์ (Stem Cell) คือเซลล์ที่มีความสามารถในการแบ่งตัวได้อย่างไม่จำกัดและสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเป็นเซลล์ชนิดต่างๆ ในร่างกายตามหน้าที่ของเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดนั้นๆ เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดมีหลายชนิด แต่ละชนิดมีคุณสมบัติและหน้าที่ที่แตกต่างกันออกไป รวมถึงการนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ในทางการแพทย์

เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดชนิดมีเซนไคม์ (Mesenchymal Stem Cells) เป็นเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดชนิดหนึ่งที่มีคุณสมบัติในการลดการอักเสบ ส่งเสริมการเจริญเติบโตของเซลล์ และซ่อมแซมเนื้อเยื่อที่เสียหาย เซลล์ชนิดนี้สามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเป็นเซลล์กระดูกและเซลล์กระดูกอ่อนได้ โดยเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดชนิดนี้สามารถพบได้ในเนื้อเยื่อไขมัน ไขกระดูก รก สายสะดือ และเนื้อเยื่อรากฟัน เป็นต้น

ในปัจจุบัน เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดชนิดนี้ได้รับความนิยมในการนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ในทางการแพทย์ทางเลือก ทั้งในมนุษย์และสัตว์ เนื่องจากคุณสมบัติในการควบคุมการอักเสบในโรคต่างๆ เช่น โรคข้ออักเสบ โรคลำไส้อักเสบเรื้อรัง และภาวะอักเสบอื่นๆ รวมถึงช่วยปรับภูมิคุ้มกันเพื่อรักษาเกี่ยวกับโรคภูมิคุ้มกันต่างๆ นอกจากนี้ยังมีงานวิจัยมากมายที่สนับสนุนประสิทธิภาพของเซลล์ชนิดนี้

คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ได้จัดตั้งธนาคารเซลล์สัตว์ (KUVACB) ขึ้นเพื่อสรรหาและผลิตเซลล์ต้นกำเนิด Mesenchymal stem cell ที่มีมาตรฐานและคุณภาพสูง รวมทั้งมีการตรวจสอบคุณสมบัติอย่างละเอียด เพื่อเปิดให้บริการเซลล์บำบัดสำหรับการรักษาโรคในสัตว์เลี้ยงของท่าน ซึ่งเป็นแนวทางในการรักษาสัตว์ป่วยทางเลือกร่วมกับแนวทางมาตรฐานเพื่อให้เกิดประสิทธิผลที่ดียิ่งขึ้น
